The makers of things, the doers of deeds
Phurniture is an effort to make stuff as sustainably and ethically as humanly possible. We push ourselves to the limit to follow and create good practice in making furniture and, as far as material choice is concerned, recycling and repurposing is central. Phurniture is passionate about waste management and the ability to find new purposes for old materials. Phurniture exists solely to promote good practice in material sourcing in furniture manufacturing. To this end, we designed the Pholiage range of sound diffusion panels made of a mixture of sawdust and bio-based glue. Reclaimed wood and repurposed parts excite us.
Atakan (director) studied Software Engineering at Teesside, Linguistics at SOAS and Product Design at Ravensbourne. That is, he studied these subjects, and still does study them to an extent, but shied away from academia. He calls himself an artist most of the time and a part-time designer whereas his real work, he considers, is problem solving. “Collecting interesting problems” is what he does at General Design Project, an online blog he started as a repository of free-to-use intellectual property and a meeting place for people affected by design problems.
